The UNDP project, a companion of JICA project, was funded by the Government of Japan through Japan's Human Resources Development Fund, and implemented by the PV lab/SSRC in close collaboration with the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Housing and Public Utilities. The project objectives are: - Raise the local capacities in various aspects of operating, maintaining and managing of the PV systems. - Integrate the PV systems into the national electricity system with a suitable financial mechanism. - Create the most suitable institutional framework for effective decentralized electricity systems in rural areas. - Create small scale local cottage industry based on excess energy in summer (medallions, stone powder plateau). - Create local technical capacity for the servicing of PV systems. The project addresses the following three legs of sustainability: Environment: The installed systems are clean sources of energy. They replaced the utilization of kerosene or gas lamps, thus improving cleanliness of air in rooms and health condition of people.
Economics: In the four villages, the provision of electricity and water from a sustainable source of energy for the communities contributed to poverty alleviation. The introduction of small scale cottage industry in Zarzita provided a new activity in the daily life of the village and an alternative source of income for the villagers. Social sustainability: The improvement of the livelihood of the people in the target villages was a result of introducing electricity and drinking water. Surveys by JICA study team showed an increase of literacy, productivity of homework.
